A Discussion on Alternative Medicine

You may not have been aware of it, but there could have been times in the past when you thought of alternative medicine. Do you recall having an awful headache and you thought that the best way to get rid of it is by pulling out your hair, or perhaps by getting whacked on the head? Right there and then, you were already considering alternative medicine.

Alternative medicine, however, does not translate into inflicting self-pain. Instead, the term "alternative medicine" is used to describe other approaches of medical treatment or healing other than the conventional means which more often than not involves taking medication whether prescribed or not.

People resort to alternative medicine as they do not want to grow dependent on allopathic drugs, all of which have side effects. Also, people by nature are curious about new things and would like to try them out. Besides, it is to your advantage if you can identify a better way to cope with your usual health complaints.

Much of what is now known as "alternative medicine" (also referred to as "alternative healing") has been around for centuries and is part of ancient traditions of other cultures. These traditions include the use of hair-thin needles inserted into different points in the body to relieve pain; others rely on herbs and shrubs to treat specific ailments; some apply a mud paste to cool the body while many prefer a hot water bottle, an ice pack or sometimes a simple massage treatment.

All these are healing techniques and have been proven effective for pain-relief and curing other ailments. Considering that these practices fall outside mainstream medicine, they are referred to as "alternative." The general public has only recently taken to these methods as they have been kept obscure in the past by concerted advertising efforts of those in the pharmaceutical industry.

A single definition of the term "alternative medicine" may be impossible to establish since there are countless systems and practices currently explored by health experts and introduced to the market.

Alternative medicine encompasses natural medicine, holistic medicine, integrated medicine, complementary medicine, and many other related techniques not included in the teaching curricula of US, European and other conventional medical schools.

On the other hand, acupressure, aromatherapy, ayurveda, homeopathy, hypnosis, massage, meditation, music therapy, naturopathy, nutritional therapy, relaxation, and yoga all fall under alternative therapies.

As a whole, the fundamental concept behind alternative medicine is achieving health and wellness by keeping all aspects of a person's life balanced and in sync and harmony.

Advocates of alternative medicine profess that health is not synonymous to the absence of disease; and that living necessitates enthusiasm the lack of which signifies ill health. Further, the philosophies behind the system uphold the uniqueness of each person, his definite purpose in life, and the need for inspiration and motivation for living a full life. Accordingly, alternative medicine aims to help people maintain their purpose in life so they could function at their highest abilities.

From the standpoint of alternative medicine, one need not be automatically concerned with an illness as it can be caused by things other than infections. Instead of being worried about it, one can view illness as an opportunity for change, to transform one into a different and better person.

Thus, alternative medicine integrates into its system a comprehensive assessment of personality, the state of emotions, and other factors influencing one's behaviour. This works along the line of starting a new thought process necessary for any behavioural modification or personality change. Often cited as an example is the legend of the great Indian warrior king, Ashoka, who having witnessed the extent of the death and destruction he caused at the Kalinga war, gave up everything to become a Buddhist reformer.

Perhaps the next time you feel sick, you may wish to stay away from the conventional drugs. Take the time to sit back and relax with your favorite music playing in the background. Try to recall pleasant memories and look at the path you have taken. You may want to redefine your goals and identify your very purpose in life. In the process, you will realize that you are regaining strength and your enthusiasm and zest for life.
