Aromatherapy: The Essentials
Start here and be sure to check the Aromatherapy Guide that provides information on over fifty different essential oils!
Aromatherapy is the practice of using plant oils to better the physical or psychological self. The essential oils can be delivered in pure form through the use of dilution or diffusion, and also are very popular in candles and soaps. These essential oils can be used to aid in sickness, create a pleasant aroma, and enhance bathing. They also are a wonderful companion to massage when mixed with massage oil.
There are an abundance of essential oils for the consumer to choose from, but some of the most popular include lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, and eucalyptus. In certain circles, the essential oil patchouli is quite popular as well, though many find this oil to carry an unpleasantly strong odor.
While many practitioners of aromatherapy stick exclusively to burning or diffusing essential oils, it is also beneficial to apply essential oils on the skin, when used correctly.
Applying certain pure, undiluted essential oils to the skin can be dangerous, so the oils must first be diluted in non-essential oil such as vegetable or olive oil.
However, when used properly, the benefits of applying these oils to the skin (and thereby introducing them to the bloodstream) can be significant. These oils can assist with hygiene, focus, stress relief, and overall health issues when applied directly.
It is important to be a conscious consumer when selecting products which claim to be natural aromatherapy products.
Many companies use deceiving language to mask the use of synthetic materials in their products, something which may have an adverse effect on the essential oils. Noxious chemicals added to essential oils have been known to produce headaches and nausea, which is clearly in direct opposition to what these oils are for. Therefore, make the choice to purchase only from reputable, established dealers that are fully committed to providing all-natural aromatherapy products. You'll be glad you did.
