The Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea has been around for thousands of years and has been consumed on a daily basis by millions of people around the world.

The health benefits of green tea are numerous as it is known to contain healing antioxidants as well as other natural chemicals providing protection against cancer, tooth decay, anti-inflammatory disease, cardiovascular disease and depression.  Not only is green tea recommended for its numerous health benefits but it is also touted as an efficient and effective tool for weight loss.

Green tea is often used as a substitute for regular tea or coffee due to its ability to boost the body’s metabolism and burn additional calories.  Studies indicate that green tea can safely and effectively suppress the appetite, lower cholesterol levels, stimulate the metabolism and accelerate fat oxidation.

One of the most popular benefits of green tea today is its ability to assist in weight loss.

Fat oxidation is the ability to break down fat storages for use as energy.  The body utilizes various sugars and fats from the food that we consume and synthesizes it into a chemical form of fat referred to as “triglycerides”.  Triglycerides are carried and used throughout the body.  However, excessive amounts of triglycerides are stored as fat by the body.  Luckily, green tea contains natural chemicals called polyphenols that effectively dissolve triglycerides into fuel utilized by the body as energy.  Fat oxidation can ultimately reduce the build up of fat preventing weight gain and encouraging weight loss.

Green tea contains chemical compounds which encourages the process of thermogenesis

Thermogenesis is a process in which the body generates heat and energy.  As a result there is an increase in the body’s basal metabolic rate which increases the fat burning ability of the body.  Thermogenesis increases the metabolic rate for several hours promoting caloric expenditure and the use of fat as fuel for the body an extended period of time.

One of the other benefits of green tea is slowing down and stabilizing the release of carbohydrates which prevents variable and unpredictable surges in insulin levels.  Dips in insulin levels routinely result in intense food cravings and feelings of exhaustion.

The ability of green tea to aid in weight loss is dependant on the dietary intake of each individual.  Use green tea as part of a healthy well rounded diet and you will see improvements in your overall health and well being.
