Color Therapy: Brighten Your Life!
Humans have known for a long time that color affects the way we feel, and not simply the hue but also the lightness or darkness of that color. People suffering from SAD (seasonal depression) are an example of how changes in color dramatically impact our wellbeing.
Color therapists think of color in terms of light energy (measured in wavelengths). They study the way in which people interact with specific colors or combinations of colors. Additionally they feel that every part of the body has a corresponding color to which it responds positively.
A person's sensitivity and reactions to different hues can indicate other issues emotionally or physically. Similarly, color therapists believe that applying color can alleviate problems when used properly. Let's consider an example. A person who reacts sensitively to red may be having energy or blood issues. In this case a color therapist may recommend the use of blues (for soothing) and yellow (a less intense energy color associated with happiness and upbeat attitudes).
Color therapy is also know by the term chromotherapy. It's considered an alternative healing method and may be combined with other holistic or metaphysical modalities like crystals, sound, meditation, and visualization. Most color therapists feel that combining approaches improves the overall results a person gets from the efforts.
Basically color therapy works on the Laws of Similars – like affecting like. Color therapy's goal is retuning the body, mind and spirit to a healthy overall note by pairing the right colors with the right situation.

- Red: improving blood pressure, energy levels, overall alertness.
- Orange: happiness and acumen; improving appetite and digestion.
- Yellow: easing sadness or depression, supporting memory.
- Green: overall balance, personal growth, soothing nerves.
- Blue: communication and clarity of thought. Peacefulness.
- Indigo: easing sinus problems; getting spiritually connected.
- Violet: cleansing, awareness; strong bones
Color Treatments
You need not go to a color therapist to use the ideas behind color therapy as an adjunct to regular medicine. In fact, you have a whole closet full of items just waiting for you to give them a try – your wardrobe! For example, when your energy is down, wear red or yellow (or both). When you're overly stressed out, don clothing that has blue or purple tones to support calmness.
Another simple way to apply color therapy is by buying colored bulbs. When you need a specific color's vibration, put the right bulb in a lamp nearby. Add to this foundation some aromatherapy oil dabbed on the bulb and you've got a great team going! Returning to the idea of anxiety and stress, you might use a blue bulb dabbed with lavender and bath in the glow while meditating or breathing deeply!
You can color your bath water and literally immerse yourself in a hue. The only caution on this is to make sure that whatever you use will not dye your skin or you'll end up a little bit TOO close to the color you need.
Try tinted covers for your windows, or little prisms that reflect all kinds of light around your favorite room. Rainbow hues are excellent for overall happiness and well being as well as improving hope.
How about something to help you see the light? What would that be? Colored contact lenses!
Really, your imagination can have a lot of fun here. Find fabrics for your home that have colors that support what you most need in your life. Paint personal spaces accordingly. You can even eat your colors – need a little insight?
