Hatha Yoga: More Than Just Exercise
Yoga is a diverse set of ancient spiritual practices that originated in India. It has been imported into the West where it is now considered more of an alternative medical treatment. There are many branches of yoga but Hatha yoga is the most prominent among the Western populations who, when they talk of yoga, are typically referring to Hatha yoga.
Also known as forceful yoga, Hatha yoga traditionally involves the practice of breath control, physical postures, and asceticism to prepare the body and mind for the awakening of the kundalini energy and self-realization.
The common objective in practicing yoga in the West today is for mental and physical health.
Two of the main components of Hatha yoga are concentration on the breath and focus on the posture. Concentrating on the breath is not as easy as it sounds but once you have tried it for yourself and experienced the many benefits it can bring you, you'll see why it is an essential element to Hatha yoga.
The importance of achieving great posture is tantamount to practicing great meditation. You will have to find a position that will be comfortable for you to sit in for a long time. Any discomfort during your meditation will only be a cause for distraction, making it difficult for you to concentrate on your breathing. In time, you will be able to practice with many other postures and positions that will help you reach deeper states of meditation.
Ideally, beginners should start with Hatha yoga as this is where an individual learns about the underlying principles of yoga, the mechanics of meditation, and the basic instruction on "how to begin."
First you master the different meditation postures and positions of Hatha yoga until you are comfortable with them. Then you work on your breathing patterns. When you have mastered breath control, you can begin dealing with your mind. These are three different levels of yoga and meditation and they require several steps before you can reach them. All it takes is practice and concentration.
When you have decided to take the path of yoga, it is best for you to begin with Hatha yoga. And, to be successful in your adventure and steadily gain progress, you must take the correct steps and follow them in the right order.
You need to work beyond the superficial stance and dig deeper if you want to experience the wonders and holistic benefits yoga has to offer.
Many engage in Hatha yoga today purely for its physical exertion. There are many other benefits that can be obtained from Hatha yoga but people fail to recognize or embrace of them.
When done properly, Hatha yoga promotes healing in a holistic manner.
Hatha yoga begins with physical practice and it is these exercises that bring about healing of the body, mind and soul. Regardless of your personal reasons for doing yoga, you can gain these benefits as they are mere by-products, albeit magnificent by-products, of the practice.
However, you can only be aware of these benefits or use them to your advantage if you engage in the other half of yoga, which is meditation. In practicing yoga, you must develop awareness of everything that goes on within you. Pay heed to yourself and notice the changes taking place.
Hatha yoga should be easy to learn if approached with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Hatha yoga can be mastered provided you put in all your efforts and concentration. When you have learned the Hatha yoga techniques, you can easily perform your daily exercises thereby hastening the achievement of your objective of sound health and wellness.
