Natural Skin Care: Nature's Answer to Beauty!

Going shopping for natural skin care products can be daunting. When you read the label, the number of chemical ingredients alone often boggles the mind, and you never know when your skin won't take well to products, even the salon designs.

Before you give up, there's still hope! You can make a lot of natural skin products in the comfort of your own home without spending a fortune, and also insure that nothing causes allergic reactions. In fact, there are dozens of items in your kitchen and pantry that revitalize the skin. All it takes is a little know-how to put them together to suit your body perfectly.

Skin Care, Herbs, & History

History repeatedly illustrates how much our ancestors relied on herbs, and the modern cosmetic industry did not overlook that. Commercial products unfortunately often use synthetic substitutes. But why try to outdo Mother Nature? Those of you who grow herbs will be happy to know that many of your organic adventures can translate into healthier skin too!

Consider these facts:

* People in many ancient civilizations used honey to moisturize and beautify.
* Solomon advocated the use of pomades (herbal creams) not only for personal care but health.
* Egyptians loved milk for soft skin (even Cleopatra wooed Marc Anthony using milk and rose water!).
* Olive oil was regarded as a "secret" for youthful skin in the Mediterranean.

And that is just the beginning!

Healthy, Revitalizing Pantry Pleasure

Need an exfoliant, toner, moisturizer, spot remover, etc? More than likely what you need is right in your kitchen. Better still, the natural products have very few side effects (except for possible allergies), you will always know what's going on your skin, and often the results are just as good (if not better) than high priced glamour products claim!

Home Skin Care Recipes

Here are just a few skin care recipes to get you started. I strongly suggest trying one blend at a time, testing the base ingredients on a small portion of skin to be sure that you have no adverse reactions. Most natural products won't bother you unless you have a pre-disposed allergy (and if you already know that you're allergic to an ingredient – eliminate it from the recipe or find another recipe without that component).

Facial Mask

1 Tablespoon applesauce
1 Tablespoon wheat germ
1/2 mashed avocado or cucumber
1/2 whole milk or cream
1 whisked egg
2 tbs. honey
1/4 tsp fresh ginger root grated

Directions: Gently warm your blend on the stove. While it cools a little to lukewarm, steam your face with a hot towel to open the pores. Apply for 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly. This will provide your skin with tightening, smoothness, and overall brightness.

Facial Cleanser

2 tbs. yogurt
1 tbs. orange juice (fresh squeezed)
2 tbs. grapefruit juice (fresh squeezed)
1 tbs. almond oil
1 tsp. finely ground almonds

Directions: Put all your ingredients into a fine grinder. Blend. As with the facial mask, steam your face first, then gently scrub with this blend. If you have a tendency toward dry skin, moisturize afterward.

Rose Water Pomade

1 part olive oil
1/2 part bees wax
1/2 part coconut oil
1/2 tsp. aloe per part oil/wax
1 drop of rose oil per part oil/wax

Directions: You need a pan that you will keep for wax ONLY to make this blend. Melt your bee's wax with the oil and coconut oil. Add aloe and rose oil and keep stirring diligently with a fork or spoon. As this cools you'll get a cold cream like consistency. This is an excellent nighttime, dab on cream. Apply to wrinkles or any place you want to give a little extra TLC.

Moisturizing Skin Care

One of the most common goals with natural skin care is moisturizing. It's among the most important skincare methods that promote a healthy, young complexion. The most common items recommended for moisturizing include milk/cream, aloe, rose, honey, good oil, comfrey, and chamomile. Often times this treatment is preceded with a citrus rinse to get rid of oil so that the pores can accept it better.

Generally it's good to do a little research on your skin type before preparing anything. Some blends may over-dry, while others are too oily etc. No matter what, apply your natural skin care preparation to warm, damp skin. Don't rub too vigorously – slow circular motions help your skin to accept the ingredients.

Keep notes of the various blends you try and the results. This way you can personalize your natural skin care protocol in the future.
