Five Good Reasons to Quit Smoking
5 Reasons to Quit Smoking
Truth be told, there are probably dozens (or hundreds) of very good reasons to quit smoking. When you first begin to consider quitting, however, sometimes narrowing the view helps a little.
1. Perhaps the most important of reasons to quit smoking is to protect your health. Smoking is a chief cause of lung cancer and it also contributes to heart disease. Because it decreases the flow of oxygen throughout the body, smoking can also affect your mental clarity and increase the rate at which memory loss occurs. Recent studies show that smoking can also negatively impact sexual performance, particularly in men. Other health issues include:
- snoring
- heartburn
- potential increased risk of breast cancer
- depression
Once you stop smoking, in under a half hour your blood pressure will decrease. Within 12 hours carbon monoxide levels also decrease. After three months, circulation begins to improve along with your lungs’ efficiency. In one year after you quit, you will decrease your risk of heart disease to half that of when you smoked.
2. The second reason to consider quitting smoking has to do with the people in and around your living space. While there has been some argument about secondhand smoke, most researchers feel that it can cause serious health issues.
Second hand smoke seems most devastating to children. Studies indicate that second hand smoke increases the chance of SIDs (sudden infant death) up till the age of 18 months. These children are also more likely to have asthma and colds.Â
3.We live in a very visual world and appearances mean a lot. Did you know smoking causes premature wrinkles in the skin? Over time smoking stains both fingernails and teeth an ugly yellow color while contributing to bad breath. Additionally the smell of smoke remains in your clothing, and throughout your home. If you wash the walls of a home in which a smoker resides, you’ll get tar residue!
If you want to start looking younger and healthier, and also provide a healthier living space, start working on quitting smoking now!
4. Our economy is in very difficult times. Cigarettes cost a huge sum out of your working budget. So if you’d like to save money for a special vacation, a new car, or some type of treat for yourself that you couldn’t otherwise get, this is a great reason to quit smoking.
Figure out how much you spend weekly on cigarettes. Put that money aside each time you do NOT buy them. It will add up very quickly. By the time you have your goal amount, you’ll be feeling and looking much better!
5. Finally, let’s talk about the cravings associated with smoking. Tobacco is addicting. No one wants a substance to rule over their lives. Choosing to quit is a choice for personal freedom. You won’t have to find a smoking spot at the airport, or go outside at breaks and lunch any more. Instead, you can go where you want, being healthier and well on the road to a longer life.Â
