Wellness Coach: An Advocate to Your Health

Have you ever resolved to improve your lifestyle in one way or another, only to fall short of your goals or abandon them entirely? You may need a Wellness Coach!

The fact is, everyone has trouble improving their lifestyle, especially in aspects that have been deeply instilled through many years of practice. The idea of a wellness coach is certainly a novel one, but when one thinks about it critically, it makes perfect sense. We're not born knowing how to execute a layup or catch a football, just like we're not born knowing how to effectively exercise, eat right, and provide our bodies with beneficial supplements. For these things, we can employ the services of a coach that is experienced and knowledgeable in the areas in which we wish to improve.

What is a Wellness Coach and Why Do You Need One?

A wellness coach is someone who is very knowledgeable about all aspects of preventative and alternative health, physical fitness, nutrition, stress reduction, weight management and most importantly, coaching. Much like a personal fitness trainer or a nutritionist, a wellness coach can help you create a personal lifestyle plan based on your own unique goals—and more importantly, help you achieve that plan. To get started, a good wellness coach will want to know everything about you related to your health and well-being. A few examples of the questions you might be asked include:

  • How often do you eat breakfast and what is your typical breakfast?
  • Do you exercise and if so, how often and at what intensity?
  • On a normal night, how much sleep do you get?
  • Can you list your bad habits, if any?
  • During the day do you drink coffee and if so, how much?
  • Do you smoke?
  • Do you have high blood pressure?

Using this information as a guide, the wellness coach will help you create a list of lifestyle changes that could allow you to feel better, look younger, have more energy and generally be happier than you were before. This list will general include fifty or more possible changes, such as:

  • Switch to whole grain toast.
  • Eat blueberries.
  • Stop putting sugar in your tea.
  • Practice deep breathing.
  • Learn to relax before going to bed.
  • Increase the duration of your average exercise session to at least 45 minutes.
  • Add Omega-3 and Vitamin D to your daily supplements.
  • Find a good massage therapist.
  • Check out acupuncture for your back pain.

Unless you are already an exceptionally healthy person, it will be unrealistic for you to make all of the recommended lifestyle changes at once. Therefore, your wellness coach will help you establish your personal goals and priorities.

Based on these priorities, you can then pick the specific changes you want to make first. Let's look at an example:Suppose you want to manage your weight through exercise and diet. Your wellness coach will help you devise a fitness plan and a nutritional plan ideally suited to your goals and adaptable to the realities of your career and personal life. Through feedback and motivation, your wellness coach will then help you stick with your plan.

This is just what a good coach should provide, no matter what field they play on: feedback and motivation.Once you've achieved the initial goals, your wellness coach will then help you progress to the next level though a new, perhaps even more ambitious plan.

It should be noted that a wellness coach is a not a doctor or a therapist. While wellness coaches are often certified by a wellness or coaching institute, there are no legal requirements to be a wellness coach. Therefore, it is very important for you to carefully choose a coach who has a successful record, is trustworthy, and relates to you as a holistic human being. If you are a highly motivated, self-starter type of person and you like to do things on your own, then you may not need a wellness coach. But if you have a sense of the lifestyle changes you need to make but may need someone to help you identify your priorities and keep you on the right track, a wellness coach can change your life.
